Six Ways to Decrease Dryer Vent Build-Up

Dryer

Every year, thousands of house fires are started by dryers. And it is easy to see how this can happen. Lint builds up in the dryer vent and hose of your dryer. Then a spark from the dryer ignites the lint. The next thing you know, your dryer is on fire and it spreads to the rest of your home, causing damage to your home, your belongings and possibly injuries or worse.

So what can you do to help keep this from happening?

  1. Limit how many dryer sheets you use in your dryer and how much liquid fabric softener you use in your washer. Dryer sheets contribute to the residue that can build up on your dryer’s lint trap. And liquid fabric softener can add oils and chemicals to your clothing that could make it even more flammable dryer duct cleaning.
  2. When using your dryer, only allow it to run for 30 to 40 minutes at a time. That is about how long the average load of clothing should take to dry, and running it for this length of time allows air to better circulate through the machine and will not allow as much lint and other debris to build up. If your clothes are not dry after 30 to 40 minutes, this is one of the biggest signs that you should look into hiring a professional dryer vent cleaning service.
  3. If you are washing heavier fabrics like bedding or pillows, consider allowing them to air dry. These types of thicker materials are excellent sources of lint, so the less you allow them into your dryer, the better off and cleaner your dryer vents will be!
  4. After your dryer is finished, be sure to clean out the lint trap. This is usually found inside of the dryer near the door or on top of the dryer near the control panel. Be sure to remove the lint after each load. You can also use a shop vac if you would like to vacuum more of the lint out of your dryer hose.
  5. Make sure your dryer vents to the outside and not into an attic or crawlspace. If it does vent into an attic or crawlspace, call in a professional dryer vent alteration company to get this fixed as soon as possible.
  6. Be sure to call in a professional dryer vent cleaning company at least once a year in order to get your dryer vents cleaned by experts. The less lint that is in your dryer vents, the less likely it is to catch on fire and cause damage, injury or worse.
